The worldwide biggest MINDA CLT press
MINDA is currently building the worldwide biggest CLT press for an European manufacturer of prefabricated houses with a maximum board size of 20 x 6 m. The TimberPress X 160 is the present enhancement of MINDA’s hydraulic CLT press system. Edge glued cross and length layers are pressed to CLT elements with 0,6 N/mm² – this corresponds to a total pressing load of 7200 tons. In case of a capacity of 16 cycles per shift the material handling, the glue application and the press are designed for a yearly production of 120.000 m³ for a 1-shift operation.
CLT production now in Sweden as well
The first CLT factory for big dimensions in Sweden at Martinsons in Bygdsiljum started its production in December 2016. It is capable to produce dimensions up to a maximum of 16,6 x 3,1 m. At the end of the comprehensive planning and project engineering stage the owner Olov Martinson finally decided in favor of MINDA as his supplier because on the one hand he simply had a good feeling and on the other hand because we had convinced him of our sophisticated solutions for details and our compact construction technique.
After cutting to length and planing the finger jointed length and cross lamellas are pre-compressed to length and cross layers in a buffer zone in front of the composing table. A vacuum gripper places the layers alternating on the composing table and each layer is moistened with glue. After placing the top layer the element to be pressed is transported into the TimberPress X 221 on a special plastic belt. Depending on the length of the element it runs against one of the 12 limit stops serving as an end-face limit stop during the pressing operation. The limit stops flexibly adjustable enable the manufacturer to produce the optimum board length in a fully-automatic way, without any manual intervention. The vertical pressing force is up to a maximum of 0,8 N/mm², pressing time is at 38 minutes and should still be reduced to 30 minutes within the next months. After pressing the pressed element can be processed on the machining centers and forwarded to shipping.
Minda Control Server (MCS) controls the line
Our MINDA-Control-Server (MCS) secures a trouble-free production process. This master computer system ensures a high reliability and an optimum user friendliness to the customer. MCS is the linking element between production planning and the computers of the connected machines and installations. All production data provided by the production planning are hold available on the server. All machines involved in this production process can read these data. All relevant pressing data such as duration, pressing force, glue application or board geometry are completely recorded for every CLT board.
Production of Mass Plywood Panel on a hydraulic MINDA CLT press
Company Freres Lumber with head office in Lyons, in the state of Oregon / USA has got three plywood factories for processing douglas fir. Due to falling import prices on the US market they wanted to extend their portfolio. In collaboration with the close-by Oregon State University the „Mass Plywood Panel“ (MPP) was developed being an alternative to CLT. It is made up of solid wood according to the standards of ANSI/ APA for „Structural Cross Laminated Timber“.
Plywood boards in smaller dimensions are put together to the required length by scarfing, are split in strips with different widths and then are sanded. Depending on structural requirements a MPP- element can be composed of length strips only or of a combination of length and cross strips up to a maximum of 9 layers.
MINDA designed the TimberPress X 337 which allows a pressing of boards with a maximum of 3,6 x 14,6 m. In one pressing cycle (with a duration of 40 minutes) up to 32 m³ Mass Playwood Panels can be produced. The manufacturer uses glue type MUF. A multi-track feeding of the press is possible.
In comparison to CLT solid wood elements up to 20 % smaller dimensions can be used due to the layers already crosswise placed in the plywood taking into account the same mechanical properties. Beginning of production in the USA is planned for January 2018.
